The railway communication of Chittagong with the other parts of the country has been suspended after five bogies of an oil-carrying wagon got derailed at Fouzdarhat railway station in Chittagong on Wednesday morning.
Station Manager Abul Kalam Azad told the Dhaka Tribune: “No scheduled trains could leave the station since the derailment.”
He said the oil had spilled over from the bogies which were carrying some 30,000 litres of furnace oil and flooded the canals and fields near the station.
Chief Engineer Abdul Hye of Bangladesh Railway said: “The derailment took place when the engine of the wagon stopped working while the wagon was changing its track at the station.”
However, the railway authorities are yet to detect the reason behind the incident.
Meanwhile, the wagon driver and his assistant have been suspended temporarily.
Following the derailment, a four-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Divisional Traffic Officer Zakir Hossian will lead the committee.
