3 ex-CU officials get 3-year term

A Chittagong court on Tuesday has sentenced three years imprisonment to three former officials including former exam controller of Chittagong University (CU) in two separate cases regarding result forgery of law department of the university.

The same court also fined Tk3,000 to each convict in each case; in default they have to be served more six months imprisonment in each case, said court sources.

The court of Chittagong Divisional Special Judge, SM Ataur Rahman, sentenced the verdict in presence of the three accused, said Advocate Mezbah Uddin, counsel of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The convicts are former Exam Controller GM Latif, former Deputy Exam Controller Habibur Rahman and former Section Officer Nasir Uddin of CU, he said.

The verdict of the two cases will be implemented at the same time, added the sources.

On November 30, 1997, the then deputy director Nurul Huda Azad of ACC in Chittagong lodged the two cases with Hathazari police station over result forgery in 1990 and 1993.

In 1990, the convicts forged the mark-sheets of five candidates of Masters course of law department while they again forged the mark-sheets of 48 candidates of the same course of the same department of the university in 1993, said in the case documents.

The court framed charges against the accused on November 25, 2002 while the court sentenced the verdict under section 420, 477 and 478 of Criminal Procedure Code and under section 5(2) of Corruption Prevention Act 1947 after testifying eight witnesses for 1990’s incident and 13 witnesses for 1993’s incident, said the prosecutor.
