Update : 07 Jul 2014, 12:45 PM

The national newspapers were distributed among the people of the district on Monday, seven days after the local hawkers stopped distributing those.

The local hawkers, who were observing a strike since June 30 following a dispute with the newspaper agents over payments, have called off their strike after holding a negotiation meeting with the agents.

The meeting was held in presence of local lawmaker Mizanur Rahman at Khulna Press Club on Saturday.

After hearing both the groups, Mizanur said the dispute between the hawkers and the agents would have to be resolved through mutual understanding. But the distribution of the newspapers cannot be stopped.

"Hawkers can take newspapers as payable from the agents. They will pay the due price by the 16th day of next month and will buy newspapers in cash after three months," said the lawmaker.

Later, representatives of newspaper agents, hawkers and bureau chiefs came to an understanding and decided to call off the strike from Monday.

On June 29, the local hawkers decided to stop distributing newspapers in the district as the agents asked them to buy newspapers in cash from July 1.

The hawkers protested the decision and stopped distributing newspapers in the district on June 30. They also barred the newspapers' agents from distribute those to the readers.
