A doctor of Dhaka Orthopedic Hospital has been awarded life term imprisonment for killing his wife.
Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Md Abdul Mazid passed the order on Monday afternoon.
The court also sentenced the girl friend of the doctor to life term imprisonment.
The accused are -- Dr Mohammad Tozammel Hossain and Shamsunnahar alias Nargis.
The court also fined them Tk10,000 each. In case of failing to pay the fine, they will have to serve one more year in jail.
In its order, the court said the accused deserved death penalty for the crime. But, the court gave them life term considering their ages.
On July 6, 2004, Dr Tozammel hacked his wife Fahmida Aktar Nazma to death at their Mirpur residence following a brawl over his extra-marital affairs with Nargis.
Victim's brother Mehedi Hasan filed a murder case with Mirpur police station against the duo on the following day.
