Despite a low turnout in the first phase of voter registration, the electoral enrolment has increased considerably in the second phase which was held between June 15 and 24 in 218 upazilas across the country.
The second phase enrolment increased by 5.73%, which was only 4% in the first phase.
The Election Commission officials told the Dhaka Tribune the second phase gathered pace in comparison with the first one.
The commission formed a central monitoring committee to find out problems in the ongoing voter roll update since it failed to observe an expected turnout during the first phase enrolment.
Under the central committee, 10 sub-committees had been formed that will submit area-based reports to the main committee.
The central monitoring committee yesterday held a meeting to discuss the upcoming third phase electoral list update which would continue from September 1 to 10 in 115 upazilas.
SM Asaduzzaman, director of public relations, EC, told the Dhaka Tribune, “We sat to discuss the third phase voter enrolment and focused on problems encountered during the last two phases.”
According to the second phase enrolment report, most upazilas witnessed above 5% turnout of the electorate while many of them saw 6%.
Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz said the percentage of voter enrolment increased considerably in the second phase in comparison with the first phase.
He hoped the third phase would see a large number of eligible individuals register their names in the electoral list.
The EC officials were monitoring the voter roll updating programme across the country, added Hafiz.
