Juba Dal activist dies in Jessore jail

Update : 04 Jul 2014, 01:04 PM

An activist of Jubo Dal has died in Jessore Central Jail on Friday morning.

The deceased is Samiuzzaman Uzzal, 32.

Shahjahan Mia, superintendent, Jessore Central Jail, told journalists that Uzzal was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital after he felt sick at the jail around 10am. Later, the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Shafiullah Sabuj, medical officer, Jessore Medical College Hospital, said Uzzal died before he was brought to the hospital.

The district unit BNP and the family members of Uzzal claimed that police tortured him to death as he failed to give extortion to the law enforcers.

Uzzal's father Moniruzzaman said: “Kotwali police arrested my son on June 20 without any specific allegation. He was tortured by the police as the police were not given demanded money.”

Denying the allegation, Shahidul Islam, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that the Jubo Dal activist was in safe custody for drug addiction.

“He was not tortured. He fell sick and the police rushed him to hospital.”

Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, general secretary, Jessore district unit BNP, told the Dhaka Tribune that the “victim” was not given proper treatment by the jail authority.

“We will arrange a press conference tomorrow (Saturday) in this connection,” he added.
