Six students of Barisal University have been suspended for beating up assistant register and other staff members of the university.
The decision came from a special meeting of the university syndicate members held at its Dhaka office on Monday.
Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman, BU syndicate member, has told the Dhaka Tribune.
He said Aqib Zaved Khan and Al-Mamun, third year students of Marketing, Reza Sharif and Enamul Huq Moni, 3rd-year students of Management Studies, Saidul Islam, a 3rd-year student of Economics and Mithun Dey of 1st-year Political Science departments, have been suspended till further order for breaking academic discipline.
The action was announced after the students of BU boycotting semester final examinations demanded withdrawal of cases lodged by BU authority against them for ransacking register office and injuring assistant register and other staff members on June 5.
After that BU authority on Sunday declared to postpone the examinations till July 8.
The BU authority also formed a fresh probe committee headed by Prof Md Hanif, Manirul Islam, BU acting register and convener of BU officers-staffs solidarity council (Barisal Bishwabidyaloy Karmakarta Karmachari Oikya Parishad) as member-secretary and Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, Sirajuddin Ahmed, syndicate members, Dr Md Muhsin Uddin, head of English department and former acting register, Prof Shafiul Alam, president BU Teachers Association, as members.
The committee was asked to submit report within next 4-weeks, Prof Dr Akhtar said.
BU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Harunor Rashid also said stern disciplinary action would be taken against the troublemakers on the basis of the report of probe committee and replies to show cause notices by the accused.
Saiduzzaman, estate officer of BU, lodged the case on June 7 with Kotwali police station.
In that case more than 50 BU students including the aforesaid 6 were accused.
