DU to celebrate 93rd founding anniversary Tuesday

The students, teachers and staff of Dhaka University (DU) will observe the 93rd founding anniversary of the university on Tuesday.

The authorities will celebrate Dhaka University Day on the campus premises with much festivity and enthusiasm, said a press release.

The theme of this year's day is “Higher education for economic development and social justice development.”

To observe the day, the university authorities have chalked out elaborate programmes including hoisting flags at the top of all student dormitories and main buildings of the university, cutting cake, bringing out colourful procession, research exhibition, discussions, reminiscence and cultural session, sports and debate competitions, drama and short film show .

Speaker of the parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury will inaugurate the day long programme in the morning.

However, the university authorities have already completed all the preparations to observe the day.

Dormitories and academic buildings have been decorated with lights and paintings for the day.

The University of Dhaka, also known as “Oxford of the East” was established during the British Raj in 1921. It gained reputation in its early years and has contributed significantly to the modern history of Bangladesh.

Established in 1921 under the Dacca University Act 1920 of the Indian Legislative Council, it is modelled after British universities. Academic activities started on July 1, 1921 with 3 Faculties: Arts, Science and Law; 12 Departments: Sanskrit and Bengali, English, Education, History, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Persian and Urdu, Philosophy, Economics and Politics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Law; Dormitories for students: Salimullah Muslim Hall, Dacca Hall and Jagannath Hall.

Today, it is the largest public university in Bangladesh, with a student body of 33,000 and a faculty of 13 and with 11 institutes.
