Update : 27 Jun 2014, 11:23 AM

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has returned home with an understanding that it is an "excellent beginning" in the relationship between the two countries.

Joint secretary for external publicity of the Indian foreign office Syed Akbaruddin made the statement at a briefing at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport ahead of Sushma's departure, BSS reports.

"Our assessment of the visit is . . . it was extremely fruitful and satisfying, "Syed Akbaruddin said.

He added that Swaraj took back with an understanding that it is an "excellent beginning" in addressing each other’s concerns and working together with the spirit of good neighbourliness.

Asked if India's engagement and with the incumbent government in Bangladesh would continue its tenure until 2019, Akbaruddin said: "Governments work with governments and the Indian government will work with the Bangladeshi government."

"All other issues, internal to Bangladesh, will need to be addressed by the people of Bangladesh," he added.

Bangladesh's foreign secretary Shahidul Haque and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Tarique A Karim saw Swaraj off at the VIP lounge of the airport on Friday afternoon.

This was Sushma's first foreign trip since assuming office last month as the newly-elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign minister, following Bharatiya Janata Party's landslide victory in the Indian general elections.
