State Minister for Finance MA Mannan yesterday said major police reforms and effective trainings were essential to strengthen capacities of upazila councils to ensure better service for the people.
He made the observation while addressing at a national conference, titled ‘Upazila Governance to Improve Service Delivery,’ at Cirdap auditorium in the capital.
The conference was organised by think tank Unnayan Shamannay (US) with support from the USAID funded SDLG project.
Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) Senior Research Fellow Dr Mahfuz Kabir presented the keynote paper of the conference, which identified sectors where upazila councils have been successful in improving services.
The sectors included health, agriculture, women’s rights and disaster relief, as per data provided by Upazila Parishads and their standing committees.
The conference was also attended by the representatives of ministries of Health, Agriculture, Women and Children’s Affairs, members of Bhairab upazila council and the representatives from the civil society.
