Obaidul: Government to construct tunnel pathway under Karnaphuli

Update : 26 Jun 2014, 07:54 PM

Communications Minister Obaidul Kader yesterday said the government would soon build a tunnel pathway under the Karnaphuli River to develop an industrial zone on both banks of the river, just like Shanghai in China.

He made the announcement while addressing a seminar titled “Technology in 21st century’s journalism:

Bangladesh Perspective,” jointly organised by Chittagong University Journalists Association (CUJA) and private telecom company Robi at the Theater Institution.

He also added that the Karnaphuli tunnel would be a great achievement for the country, just like the Padma Bridge.

The minister also informed that out of the 190 kilometre Dhaka-Chittagong highway, around 72 kilometers have already been transformed into four lanes and the rest of the transformation will be complete by December next.

“Government has also started feasibility study for a Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway,” he said.

He also said officials and staff of the Communications Ministry would not be allowed to take holidays during the Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr to ease the public suffering.

The seminar, inaugurated by Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Professor Anwarul Azim Arif, was presided by CUJA President Humayun Masud.

CU Assistant Professor for Communication and Journalism Shahabuddin Nipu presented the keynote paper. The programme was also attended by ATN News Output Editor Pranab Shaha.
