India will supply another 100 megawatts (MW) of power to Bangladesh from Tripura's Palatana power plant by the end of this year.
The decision came from the joint technical committee (JTC) meeting held yesterday in Dhaka regarding the setting up of a transmission line to supply 100 MW of electricity to Bangladesh from the Palatana power plant in Tripura.
The four-member JTC was formed by the Bangladesh and Indian governments earlier in April this year.
“At the meeting, Bangladesh and India expected to implement the power supply plan by the year end,” Chief Engineer of Power Development Board Md Mizanur Rahman, who attended the meeting as a JTC member, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday. The JTC will also submit a report about its plan to implement the 100MW power project to the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) in two weeks.
The meeting of the JSC on Cooperation in Power Sector will be held in New Delhi in September. Mizan said there was a sub-station at Comilla south and this station needed to be upgraded in order to bring in the power from India.
“The meeting [of JTC] discussed the technical aspects of setting up the new connectivity transmission line across the border through Akhaura point on the Bangladesh side,” he added.
“We will need to construct a 52km line for power transmission, of which 30km will be inside Bangladesh and 22km will be inside India,” he said.
India's Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) runs the Palatana plant.
