Around 300 houses were damaged as a tornado lashed seven villages of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira yesterday morning.
Local sources said the storm had swept over Harinagar, Bhetkhali, Mirgang, Parsemari, Hetalkhali, Jotindranagar, Golakhali and Chunkuri around 10:30am. However, no casualty was reported.
Abul Kashem Moral, chairman of Munshiganj union parishad, told the Dhaka Tribune that the storm coupled with rain hit the villages and damaged around 300 houses, including thatched and semi-pacca structures.
Besides, several educational institutions and crops on vast tracks of land were damaged and a number of trees uprooted during the storm.
“Many residents of these villages are now staying under the open sky,” he said, adding that immediate relief was needed for them.
Rahima Bewa, a resident of Harinagar village, said she along with her five family members had been staying under a tree since yesterday morning.
“We need urgent relief as our food grains have been washed up by rainwater,” she added.
Tabibur Rahman, Shyamnagar upazila nirbahi officer, said they were yet to estimate the losses caused by the storm.
“After estimating the losses, we will take initiatives to help the affected people,” he said.
