Tk289.44 crore for Chittagong

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved Tk289.44 crore to solve water logging problem of port city Chittagong.

Under the project, the existing canals of the port city Chittagong will be rehabilitated alongside excavating of some new canals for quick removal of rain water in the rainy season, reports BSS.

Besides, some new ponds will be excavated to preserve water.

Under the project, Chittagong City Corporation will implement the "Canal excavation project from Bahaddarhat Baroipara to Karnaphuli River" to be completed by June 2016, Planning Ministry sources said.

The approval came from an ECNEC meeting held on Tuesday at the NEC conference room in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The ECNEC has approved a total of three development projects involving Tk503 crore.

After the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has told the reporters.

"Of the total project cost, Tk427.12 crore will come from the national exchequer while the remaining Tk76.74 crore from the own fund of the respective organizations," he added.

The planning minister also informed a total of 212 development projects were approved in the current fiscal in 26 ECNEC meetings with estimated cost of Tk1,22,040 crore.
