In the wake of the massive infection of a virus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), the vaccination for influenza and meningitis for all hajj pilgrims from Bangladesh has been made mandatory.

The decision came from an inter-ministerial meeting on Monday afternoon.

Emerging from the meeting, Professor Benazir Ahmed, the director of communicable disease control of the Health Bureau, informed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said the government has already begun the process of purchasing the vaccines for influenza and meningitis for the pilgrimages.

“All the hajj pilgrims have to take the vaccines before one month of traveling to Saudi Arabia.”

The hajj pilgrims were given the vaccines from the last couple of years. However, it has been made mandatory from this year, he added.
