'Name Padma bridge after Fazilatunnesa Mujib'

Update : 19 Jun 2014, 10:42 PM

Jatiya Party’s presidium member Kazi Feroz Rashid, who frequently criticises the government in Parliament, yesterday proposed that the Padma bridge should be named after the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s mother Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib for her ‘behind the scene contribution’ to the country.

In an unscheduled slot, Kazi Feroz took the floor and made the proposal drawing immediate support from the deputy leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, independent MPs Rustom Ali Farazi and Hazi Selim and the Awami League’s Fazilatunnesa Bappy.

“The contract agreement for the [proposed] Padma bridge has been signed. The communication minister has said the bridge will be opened for traffic by 2018. This bridge must have a name. I propose naming the bridge after a noble woman who has inspired (Bangabandhu) in the war of independence and other movements from behind the scene,” Kazi Feroz told the House.

“She never came in the newspaper headlines, never enjoyed the state power. She is Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib,” he said. Seconding the proposal, the deputy leader Sajeda Chowdhury said Fazilatunnessa Mujib would be remembered for her behind the scene role in every movement of the country.

“Bhabi [Fazilatunnessa Mujib] never came outside, but the Awami League was run according to her instruction. People will be happy if the bridge is named after her”.
