Do not search vehicle sans specific charge

Update : 19 Jun 2014, 09:44 PM

The police have been directed not to search any vehicle on the highways without any specific allegation before and after the celebration of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

The decision came at a meeting on “law and order” and “traffic management” held at the police headquarters yesterday.

According to meeting sources, the decision was taken to ensure smooth traffic movement on highways as well as to ease sufferings of people travelling to and from their homes. Additional police officials would be deployed on roads and highways.

The decision, sources said, came in the face of widespread allegations against a section of law enforcers who search vehicles as part of their involvement in extortion.

Apart from providing special security during Eid, the police were warned against getting into any unlawful activity such as extortion on the street and harassing people.

At the meeting, top police officials directed their subordinates to be on alert for movement of nosimon, korimon, bhotbhoti and other mini vehicles to avoid accidents on highways.

According to decisions at the meeting, special measures have been taken to prevent extortion, mugging, pick-pocketing, doping and other criminal activities at the rail, launch and bus terminals as well as on the highways across the country.

Besides, the meeting also decided to install CCTV cameras at all large shopping malls and markets so that people could enjoy trouble-free shopping.

Presided over by Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker, the meeting, among others, was attended by chiefs of Special Branch of police, Criminal Investigation Department, Rapid Action Battalion, all police commissioners and deputy inspector-generals of all ranges.

Hassan Mahmood Khandker also emphasised drives against use of illicit drugs and formalin.
