PM favours two-child policy

Update : 19 Jun 2014, 11:00 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina favours a two-child policy for Bangladesh to ensure the presence of enough young people in the country.

The premier said: “Countries that followed a one-child policy now do not have sufficient youths and young workforce.

“Now they have started changing their slogans and are opting for two to three children instead of one in a family.”

Hasina was addressing officials of the Health Ministry during her visit to the ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat Thursday morning.

Differing with the second part of the population control slogan of Bangladesh, Hasina referred to the countries that followed one-child policy for a considerable period of time.

The Bangladeshi slogan says: “Not more than two, one is better.”

Hasina directed the authorities concerned of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry to conduct a survey excluding the last part of the slogan - "one is better" - considering the future generation.

Noting that many consider the country's population as a burden, the prime minister said the population could be turned into an asset if proper education and healthcare services could be ensured.
