Hillside dwellers to be evicted before Ramadan

Update : 17 Jun 2014, 08:58 PM

Chittagong district administration had decided to conduct eviction drives at the risky hills of Chittagong before Ramadan.

The decision came yesterday after a preparatory meeting of the Hill Management Committee held at the Chittagong deputy commissioner’s conference room.

Chittagong district Deputy Commissioner Mesbah Uddin said the Hill Management Committee had already identified 30 risky hills.

“Of the 30 risky hills, 666 families are living vulnerably in 11 hills illegally. We are going to evict those people before Ramadan,” he said.

Asking to remove all the illegal connection, the DC said they were going to conduct eviction drives after disconnecting the illegal gas, power and water connections.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (revenue) SM Abdul Quader said each eviction team would comprise three representatives.

Replying to a query, the DC said they were going to take legal actions against those who were colluding with erecting illegal houses in the hills.

The 14th Hill Management Committee meeting was attended by officials from Chittagong City Corporation, Chittagong Development Authority, Housing and Public Works, Fire Service and Civil Defence, Power Development Board, Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd and Chittagong Metropolitan Police, among others.
