The daylong road blockade imposed by Parbattya Bangali Chhatra Parishad protesting the arrest of its Khagrachhari district unit General Secretary SM Masum Rana was ended peacefully yesterday.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sadar circle) Sarwar Alam said no picketing was held in the district during the blockade.
Not a single bus or trucks was able to leave Khagrachhari but some battery run auto-rickshaw were in operation in the streets.
Additional police were deployed at all important places in the district to avoid untoward incidents, he added.
Thousands of people suffered immensely as no long distance or inter-district buses, trucks, lorries and covered-vans were seen on the roads during the strike.
Office-goers and students were seen going to their destinations on foot.
Earlier, leaders of Parbattya Bangali Chhatra Parishad (PBCP) imposed daylong road blockade on Tuesday as authority not released its Khagrachhari district unit General Secretary SM Masum Rana by Monday evening.
Investigating Officer (IO) and Sadar police station Officer-in-charge Md Mizanur Rahman said police arrested SM Masum Rana from a private business centre in Narikel Bagan area in the hill town on last June 12 following an extortion case filed by a constructor Zunan Chakma on June 8.
According to the case, Zunan Chakma mentioned that SM Masum Rana and some of his cohorts stopped his under construction work at upazila area in the hill town demanding Tk3 lakh as extortion on June 6.
Earlier, United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF), Pahari Chhatra Sangram Parishad, Gonatantrik Jubo Forum and Hill Women’s Federation observed strike on Sunday protesting attack on indigenous people by members of Bangladesh Border Guards and land grabbing by newly established BGB members.
