Mridha and 2 others indicted in fresh cases

A Chittagong court has framed charges against three former officials of Bangladesh Railway (BR), including Yusuf Ali Mridha, in two fresh cases filed over railway recruitment scam for the east zone.

The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Session Judge SM Mujibur Rahman framed charges against former general manager Mridha, former additional chief mechanical engineer Hafizur Rahman and former senior welfare officer Golam Kibria.

Apart from the three officials, four candidates of Tool Keeper post and another candidate of Ticket Issuer post were also indicted in the cases as they tried to get job using illegal process.

The court also fixed August 6 and 7 for recording depositions respectively in cases for recruitment irregularities Tool Keeper and Ticket Issuer posts.

Earlier, Assistant Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) SM Rashidur Reza submitted the charge sheets of the two cases on April 2.

The cases were lodged with Kotwali police station on September 13, 2012.

The accused were indicted under section 5 (2) of Corruption Prevention Act 1947 and under sections 166, 167, 477, 217 and 109 of Criminal Procedure Code, said Advocate Mahmudul Haq Mahmud, counsel for ACC.

The east zone of Railway issued seven advertisements in October and November, 2010 to fill up 3419 vacant posts in 38 categories.

A total 13 cases were lodged on September, 2012 and February, 2013 regarding irregularities in recruitment for different posts in BR (East).

Out of the 13 cases, the trial of four cases regarding recruitment irregularities for Fuel Checker, Assistant Chemist post, Tool Keeper and Ticket Issuer posts are underway. The trio have been indicted in those four cases.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel seized Tk70 lakh from a car of Omar Faruk, assistant personal secretary of the then railway minister Suranjit Sen Gupta, on April 9, 2012. During the drive, Mridha and Railway Nirapatta Bahini Dhaka Divisional Commandant Enamul Haque were inside the car.

Following the incident, the former railway minister resigned and his APS was suspended while Mridha and Enamul were also suspended temporarily.
