A terrorist ringleader has been killed in a “gunfight” with police in No 4 Aliapur area under Begumganj upazila early Saturday.
The deceased, Abul Bashar, 45, was the chief of “Bashar Bahini” and also a former member of Alaiyapur union parishad, said police.
Begumganj police station Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman said: “Being tipped off, a team of Begumganj police conducted a drive in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong and arrested Bashar on Thursday. Later he was taken to Noakhali on Thursday night.
After interrogation, police along with Bashar conducted a drive in Aliapur area for recovering firearms around 2am on Saturday. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, associates of Bashar opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight,” he added.
“Bashar was caught in the line of fire and injured. He was rushed to Noakhali Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 2:45am.”
