A robber leader has been killed in a “gunfight” between the robber gang and the law enforcers in Sadar upazila of Satkhira early Friday.
The deceased, Islam Morol, 45, has been identified as the chief of the robber gang by the police.
Satkhira Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque said: “Acting on a tip-off, a team of police rushed to Chhaigharia Mor area of Sadar upazila early Friday while the robbers were taking preparation to loot a passenger bus.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire and exploded crude bombs. In retaliation, the police also fired back that triggered a gunfight,” he added.
“At one stage of the gun battle,the robbers fled the scene. Later, the police noticed Islam who had been critically injured.”
Islam succumbed to his injuries at Satkhira Sadar Hospital, the OC added.
Enamul said: “Two police members have sustained injuries during the operation. The police have recovered some weapons from the spot.”
“Islam was wanted in a number of cases, including robbery, hijacking and extortion.”
