A new 102 megawatt furnace oil-based independent power producer namely Digital Power and Associates Ltd – a sister concern of Orion Group – has kicked off its commercial operation recently.
Located on the bank of the Buriganga river at Gognagar in Narayanganj, the power plant successfully launched its operation on June 8.
Orion Group Manager (supply and chain) Chowdhury Khaled Masud broke the news to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
He said Orion’s own team was tasked with engineering, procurement and construction works of the plant.
The plant – Digital Power and Associates Ltd – is the first to achieve a commercial operation date among the six other private power projects that received contracts in July 2012.
It consists of 12 brand new engines of 20V32 manufactured by the globally renowned Wartsila of Finland.
Each engine generates 8.92mw of electricity totaling the generation of 102mw for the national grid.
The plant auxiliaries include exhaust gas boilers, oil separators, and oil transfer skids, all imported from international renowned manufacturers Alborg, West Felia, IMO etc.
Those were all environment-friendly with minimum emissions, said the Orion Group official.
The plant’s effluent will be treated with an Oily Water Separator that separates and collects sludge in a dedicated tank in an effort to minimise pollution.
This is the Orion’s third power plant, with its first two being rentals.
The two are 104mw IEL Consortium and 108mw Dutch Bangla Power plant.
Orion Group is also implementing two 660MW coal-based independent power producers (IPP), one in Dhaka and another in Khulna.
Another three similar IPPs with 1,300MW capacity have recently been awarded to Orion.
