Road, train accidents kill four, injure three in Chittagong

At least four people, including an adolescent girl, were killed and three others injured in separate train and road accidents in different areas of Chittagong yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Farzana Akter, 18, Golam Sarif, 43, Siraj Uddowla, 35, and Abu Islam, 45.

Police said Fajana, a second year student of Business Studies group at Kulgao City Corporation College, and Saju, a student of Samoli Polytechnic College in the city, were critically injured when a train hit them, said Khaled Kaisar, sub-inspector of Government Railway police outpost at Chittagong Rail Station.

SI Khaled said Farzana and Saju might be a couple and the girl was crushed under the wheel of a Chittagong University-bound shuttle train in Baizid’s Kulgao area around 11 am, leaving the girl dead on the spot.

Police sent the body to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for autopsy while the youth was admitted to CMCH, said the SI.

Golam Sarif, a tea vendor was also crushed to the death under the wheel of the train in City Gate area, said SI Kamal of GRP police outpost.

Meanwhile, Siraj was killed when a CNG-run auto rickshaw was hit by a covered van on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Jorarganj area in Mirsari upazila in Chittagong, said Sergeant Mehedi Hasan of Jorarganj Highway police outpost.

Police seized the killer covered van while its driver managed to flee after accident, said Sergeant Mehedi.

In another accident on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, two cops sustained injuries when a truck hit a police van during petrol duty in Sitakunda upazila, said Highway police outpost sources.

Nayek Abul Basher of the CMCH police outpost said Abu Islam was critically injured after being hit by a private car in City’s Khulshi area around 10am.

He was taken to CMCH where the on duty doctors declared him dead, said Nayek Bashar.

Two unnatural death cases were lodged over the train accidents.
