Eight killed in road accidents

At least eight people were killed in separate road accidents in Meherpur and Sirajganj districts yesterday.

Our Meherpur correspondent said four people were killed and 50 others injured as a bus plunged into a ditch beside the Meherpur-Chuadanga road at Meherpur Government College intersection in the district town yesterday.

 Witnesses said the Meherpur-bound bus from Kushtia skid off the road and fell into the roadside ditch after its driver lost control of the steering wheel as he was trying to take a turn at about 10:15am. This accident has left Shanto Hossain, 35, son of Shafiqul Islam of Garadova village, bus helper Mehedi Hassan, 25, son of Kazem Ali of Meherpur town and Sirajul Islam, 57, son of Niamat Ali Biswas of Mohajanpur village under Kushtia and an unidentified person dead on the spot. There are 50 people who were also injured during the accident. The injured were taken to Sadar hospital.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent them to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Sirajganj correspondent said four auto-rickshaw passengers were killed as a truck ran over the vehicle on the Nagarbari-Pabna highway.

Locals said the truck was coming from the opposite direction when it ran over the  auto-rickshaw leaving Selim Ahmed,30, of Shahzadpur upazila ,Shamsul Islam,35, of Ullapara and two unidentified people dead on the spot.

Agitated locals blocked the highway for an hour over the accident. On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
