'People have questions on May 17, 30 nexus'

Update : 03 Jun 2014, 08:22 AM

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said people have questions in their minds whether there is any nexus between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh on May 17 and killing of Ziaur Rahman on May 30.

He made the statement in a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan headquarter on Tuesday afternoon.

Responding to a query of journalists whether BNP believes in any relation between Hasina’s return to Bangladesh and Zia's killing, Fakhrul said: “People have questions whether there is any relation.”

On Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina claimed that the late president Ziaur Rahman was involved in the Bangabandhu killing.

“His [Zia] death saved him or else we would have accused him and sued him for the murder,” said Hasina.

Fakhrul said they would re-investigate the party founder Ziaur Rahman’s killing whenever they would assume the office.

When asked why did they not investigate the killing as they were in office twice, Fakhrul said: “There were some investigations but this time a more detailed investigation will take place.”

Earlier, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, widow of Ziaur Rahman, blamed Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad for Zia and Manzoor killing and said they would try Ershad for the killing.

The BNP leader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made a comment implicating Ziaur Rahman with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's killing.

“We did not get surprised after listening to such irresponsible comments made by the Awami League president because she is used to saying this type of comments. The whole nation knows her false speech and style,” he added.

Regarding Ershad, Fakhrul said: “The man who is the highest beneficiary of Zia's killing is the special envoy of today’s prime minister.”
