Three veteran social welfare activists have been awarded by Standard Chartered and The Financial Express for their individual contribution to the society.
They are Joynal Abedin from Mymensingh, Kartik Poramanik from Chapainawabganj and Polan Sarker from Rajshahi.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith handed over the awards to the recipients at “Standard Chartered-Financial Express CSR Award 2014” at a city hotel yesterday. The awards have been given in recognition to the recipients’ activities supporting the society’s poor by health-care, tree plantation and education.
Joynal Abedin, a rickshaw-puller from northern Mymensingh, established Mumtaz Hospital, a basic medical centre in his village, to provide poor with health-care service.
Another awardee Kartik Poramanik is a hairdresser by profession but demonstrated an extra-ordinary passion for tree plantation. He planted hundreds of trees in his own village Tarapur and neighboring villages under Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj.
Polan Sarker from Bausa village of Rajshahi has been awarded for his outstanding dedication to enlighten people distributing free books among the villagers.
Recognising their contribution, Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman said the central bank will take a grand initiative for the welfare of the three awardees as part of its social responsibility initiatives.
“The central bank, from now onwards, is committed with the Standard Chartered to work together for the development of these three award recipients,” he said.
Standard Chartered Bangladesh CEO Jim McCabe, CSR Award Committee Member Dr Hafiz GA Siddiqi and The Financial Express Editor Moazzem Hossain, among others, addressed the function.
