AL nervous over BJP win, claims BNP

Update : 18 May 2014, 09:17 AM

BNP is not happy over the landslide victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Indian election and its arch-rival Awami League is nervous over the matter.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the statement while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club on Sunday.

The spokesperson of the party said: “We want to say clearly that people of Bangladesh are not joyous over the Indian election result.”

“The Awami League has become nervous seeing the result and are making different comments.”

The BNP leader asked: “If you are not nervous then why are you talking so much?”

He said: “Ministers of the government have been saying that people of Bangladesh and BNP became happy over BJP’s victory in the Lok Sabha election in India. Where they saw such joy?”

Fakhrul said there is no reason for expressing joy over BJP’s victory.

“Bangladesh is victim of not only water but also in multiphase expansionism—from cultural expansionism to political expansionism. And for these there would not bring any benefit alleging India because they are working for their interests.”

“India is an independent country and is our neighbouring country. We expect friendly behaviour from them. They held an election in a democratic manner. We hope that the new government of India will realise the expectations of the people of Bangladesh and will take initiative to resolve the outstanding problems.”

On Saturday, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said those who became joyous over the victory of BJP are simply unintelligent.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia first congratulated Narendra Modi even before ending the counting of voting results, Ashraf said.

The BNP leader alleged that due to the Bangladesh government’s subservient policy, it failed to resolve the water problems with India and even they failed to protest the border killing.

“And it is for the dependency on the Indian government.”

Alleging the government for killing and abduction, Fakhrul said: “People raised their voices after the Naryanganj killing. Such incidents took place not only in Narayanganj but across the country in the last three years. The government has used the RAB to eradicate the opposition forces from the country.”
