5 inmates flee from Jessore juvenile dev centre

Five inmates fled from Jessore Juvenile Development Centre on Saturday night.

Emdadul Haque Sheikh, officer in-charge of Kotwali police station confirmed about the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.

“Five inmates of Jessore Juvenile Development Centre fled from there at around 8:30pm on Saturday,” Emdadul said.

Md Shahabuddin, assistant director of Jessore Juvenile Development Centre told journalists that some adolescents went missing from the centre. But he did not disclose the number of the fleeing inmates.

“Five inmates fled from the development centre jumping over the back wall. The adolescents were not taken inside the building in the evening,” Anisur Rahman, superintendent of police of Jessore told newsmen.

On May 4, two inmates fled the development centre during a clash between the police and the inmates.

At least 10 people including two police men were hurt in the clash erupted at the development centre over poor allocation of food.

Following the incident, a high level delegate of National Human Rights Commission led by its full-time member Kazi Reazul Hoque visited the centre to observe the situation on Friday morning.

In a press briefing after the visit, Kazi Reazul Hoque told journalists that a number of inmates at Jessore Juvenile Development Centre are under nine years, some are over 18 years.

The under aged and the over aged should be properly treated and the under aged children cannot be kept at the juvenile centre.
