Several top government administrative officials of Narayanganj have been withdrawn following a spate of abductions in the district.
Narayanganj police superintendent, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) commander and two OCs have been withdrawn, the junior home minister told the Dhaka Tribune.
“We are reshuffling the administration of the Narayanganj to see if the situation improves,” junior Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said on Tuesday night .
However, public administration ministry Senior Secretary Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury said no official notification was issued in this regard.
Several television channels were also stating that Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kanti Boral was also withdrawn. However, this could not be confirmed.
Narayanganj SP Syed Nurul Islam, RAB commander Lt Col Tarik Sayeed Mahmud and Fatullah officers-in-charge of Fatullah and Siddhirganj will now step down with responsibilities of the recent abductions.
An official of the police headquarters in the capital told the Dhaka Tribune that officers-in-charge of Fatullah and Siddhirganj police stations were withdrawn.
On Monday, Narayanganj City Corporation Ward 2 Councilor Jahirul Islam, was allegedly abducted in broad daylight. He could not be traced until this report was filed.
Narayanganj panel mayor-2 and Awami League supporter Nazrul Islam and his associate were abducted on Sunday. A senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver also went missing on that day.
On April 16, businessman Abu Bakar Siddique, also the husband of BELA Chief Executive Syeda Rizwana Hasan, was kidnapped. He was released 30 hours later.
The body of an abducted youth was found on March 7, on the death anniversary of Tanvir Mohammad Twaki who was also found dead after abduction.
Seventeen-year-old Twaki, son of cultural activist and Narayanganj Ganajagaran Mancha Convener Rafiur Rabbi, was found dead two days after he went missing on March 8 last year.
