Probe body for Drutajan derailment

A probe committee has been formed and directed to report within three days over the derailment of Drutajan Express, that was struck by a storm on the Bangabandhu bridge.

Rail Minister Mojibul Haque visited the site around 3:30am on Monday and formed the five-member probe committee on the spot to investigate the incident.

The committee, headed by Bangladesh Railway Additional Director (infrastructure) Amzad Hossain, has been directed to submit a report within three days.

Relief trains from Dhaka and Ishwardi were working to remove the carriages of the Drutajan Express until last reported on Monday morning.

The northern railway link to the capital was severed when nine carriages of the train derailed on the Bangabandhu Bridge, struck by a storm, around 11pm on Sunday.

Traffic manager of MCCC-UDC-SEL, the contracted caretakers of the bridge, Lt Commodore (retd) Mujahid Uddin confirmed that no casualties were incurred.

Sirajganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Additional Director Abdul Hamid said nine bogies of the train was leaning on the walls.

The train's guard, Md Sabur Khan, said the train leaned over and came to rest on the walls facing the south. “If the train would have leaned to the north, we would all be in the Jamuna River.”

Sirajganj Government Railway Police Officer-in-Charge Ali Akbar said the rail link between Dhaka and northern districts were severed with the derailment.

However, it remained unclear until the morning how long would it take to restore the lines.
