Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge will be completed by 2017, yesterday.
He made the statement at the inaugural function of Nitol- Niloy Dhaka Motor Exhibition 2014 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
The minister said the work order for the main structure of the Padma Bridge will be issued in June this year and both road and rail communication facilities will be available on the bridge. “Construction of the link-roads of the Padma Bridge is nearly complete and hopefully we will be able to start its main structure very soon,” he added.
Obaidul also said the government will soon be starting the construction of the metro-rail to make Dhaka city traffic congestion-free. He also expressed hope for starting the construction of the Joydebpur-Dhaka Elevated Express soon.
Elaborating future initiatives, he said: “We will bring in 650 environment-friendly taxicabs. Of them, 500 taxicabs will be for Dhaka city and 150 taxicabs for Chittagong.”
The minister said the country is witnessing a remarkable development in the communication sector due to the implementation of massive projects.
American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh president Aftab-ul-Islam, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Md Shahjahan Khan and Nitol-Niloy Group chairman Matlub Ahmed addressed the function, among others.
