CPB and SPB Teesta Barrage road march ends today

Update : 18 Apr 2014, 09:20 PM

Protesting the “weak foreign policy” of the Awami League (AL) led government, the joint-road march of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (SPB) from Dhaka to the Teesta Barrage, demanding a proper share of the Teesta river water from India, will end today at the Shadu Bazar in Hatibanda, Lalmonirhat.

The CPB and the SPB began the road march after holding a rally in front of the National Press Club on April 17.

The march also held several roadside rallies at different points along its route from Sirajgang to Rangpur highway yesterday. After ending its second day in Rangpur, the march will head for Lalmonirhat on this last day. The road march is expected to hold its concluding rally at Shadu Bazar today.

Earlier, at the roadside rallies, CPB and SPB leaders said there are 54 common rivers flowing between India and Bangladesh and the Indian government is obstructing the flow of water of these rivers by building barrages upstream, violating the international river law.

They also said the Indian government has no right to withdraw water from any river flowing unilaterally between the two countries. They also warned that India will not be allowed to do whatever they want with Bangladesh’s rivers.
