Rizwana: Return Siddique to family

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a prominent environmental activist of Bangladesh, has urged the government to return her abducted husband Abu Bakar Siddique to the family.

Rizwana made the call while talking to journalists at BRAC Centre Inn on Thursday afternoon, a day after her husband was abducted by a gang of miscreants from Narayanganj.

The chief executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) and winner of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award also expressed hope that the law enforcers would soon rescue her husband.

She said she did not get any information from the law enforcers that would make her hopeless adding that "they are yet to give any information that will make me hopeful either."

She further said she did not mention the name of any individual or company who might be behind the abduction, but requested the law enforcers not to keep those out of the investigation who have incurred loss for her legal battle against the damage of the environment.

Mentioning that Siddique might have abducted by a quarter, who wants to take revenge against her, she said: “My husband does not have any role in my professional activities.”

She also made it clear that she was yet to receive any call demanding ransom.

Sultana Kamal, Ain O Salish Kendra executive director, also expressed hope that the law enforcers would put their best effort in this regard.

Meanwhile, Iftekharuzzaman, TIB executive director, made the same call while speaking on the incident.

Earlier in the day, Rizwana claimed to have received phone- threats twice after the abduction of her businessman husband Abu Bakar Siddique.

She made the disclosure while talking to journalists after visiting the office of Detective Branch (DB) at the capital’s Minto Road in the afternoon.

During her visit to the DB headquarters, she talked to the senior detective officials and enquired about her husband’s rescue operation around 1:30pm.

Rizwana Hasan, winner of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award, told journalists that she received threats over phone two times after her husband’s abduction. However, she declined to elaborate it for the “sake of the investigation.”
