An alleged abductor has thrown acid on an Imam of a local mosque for “helping the abducted girl to be freed” at Korapara village under Jhenaidah Sadar upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
The injured Imam Masum Hossain, 27, has been admitted at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital immediately after the incident.
Witnesses said one Shamim threw acid on Masum while the Imam was coming out of the mosque around 2pm, leaving him injured.
Later, locals managed to catch Shamim and handed him over to police.
Police said Shamim has given confessional statement in primary interrogation and explained to the police the reason behind the attack.
Quoting Shamim, Jhenaidah police station officer-in- charge Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury said: “Shamim abducted a girl a few days back. Masum helped the guardians of the abducted girl to rescue her from the clutch.
Later, Masum helped the relatives of the girl to get her married to another person,” he added.
Shamim said he has thrown acid to Masum in order to take revenge, said police.
A case has been filed in this connection.
