Oman bans expat workers

The Oman government has imposed a ban on employing expatriate construction workers and housekeeping staff in the sultanate's private sector.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al-Bakri, minister of manpower on Tuesday has issued the decision temporarily on Tuesday, Oman News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The decision comes into force from May 4, 2014, the report said.

Alternative clearances may be issued for those who leave for good in these works, it said.

Earlier, the Oman government had issued another six-month ban on employing expatriate construction workers and housekeeping staff in the country that was due to expire on May 1, the Times of Oman report said.

Exceptions of this decision include the excellent, first grade, consultancy establishments, as well as the companies working for government projects, companies that are managed full time by their owners, who are registered with the Public Authority for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises (PADSME) and insured with the Public Authority for Social Insurance (PASI).

About 500,000 Bangladeshi labourers work in Oman.
