After signals consistent with the missing flights black-box recorder were detected, the robotic submarine, Bluefin-21 was deployed to the southern Indian Ocean.
The submarines mission was to search the sea bed for wreckage in the area where these signals were first detected.
The search was aborted as Bluefin-21 dived below 15,000ft and began exceeding its operational limitations.
The operators of the Bluefin-21 are the United States Navy. In a recent update, the US Navy said: “To account for inconsistencies with the sea floor, the search profile is being adjusted to extend the sonar search for as long as possible.”
The Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777-200 named Flight 370 was enroute from Kuala Lampur to Beijing on March 8. Upon entering the South China Sea, the flight lost all forms of contact with air traffic control services and any emergency frequencies. There were a total of 239 people on board including passengers and flight crew.
Malaysian officials have issued a statement saying that the plane may be somewhere in the seas west of Perth, Australia, which would be thousands of miles of course. This speculation is based upon new satellite data.
