Three more victims die, 3 still in critical stage

Three more victims of a fire at a Tejgaon sewing shop succumbed to their injuries at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.

With the three, the death toll in the fire incident rose to four as a rickshaw-van puller named Abdul Latif, 50, had succumbed to 96% burns around 1am yesterday.

Ibrahim Khalil, 35, who suffered 91% burn, died around 12:45pm yesterday; Shafiul Azam, 48, died from 95% burn injuries around 1:30pm; and Motaleb, 14, died around 11:30pm with 75% burn.

Ibrahim was an IPS businessman in Tejgaon area and a resident of West Tejturibazar area while Shaiful was the manager of the shop that caught the fire from chemical explosion. The teenager was an employee at that shop.

The fire broke out at Mahfuz Sewing and Service shop in the capital’s Tejgaon area on Thursday, leaving 11 people burnt.

Three of the injured were still in a critical condition and was receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital burn unit.

They were shop owner Mahmudul Hasan, 38, who suffered 35% burn injury, van driver Jahirul Islam, 60, with 34% burn, and Zakir Hossain, 38, a security guard of a garment unit who suffered 25% burn.

Partha Shankar Pal, resident surgeon of the burn and plastic surgery unit at DMCH, said: “We are doing our best to remove the pain of the injured.”

One of the injured – Rifat Ara Yeasmin, 19, student of Electrical Engineering of Northern University – went back home after recovering.

Meantime, Dhaka deputy commissioner’s office has started giving Tk20,000 as compensation to the family members of each of the deceased.
