Agitated residents of Kutubail area in Pagla under Fatullah police staion blockadedthe Dhaka-Narayanganj road yesterday, demanding measures to repair a transformer which has remained out of order since Tuesday.
Local sources said hundreds of local people of all ages took to the street at about 9am and put up barricade on the road putting logs and setting straws on fire. The protesters also laid seige to the residence of upazila nirbahi officer in demand of smooth power supply.
During the agitation, they brought out a procession chanting various slogans in favour of their demand.
A good number of vehicles on both sides of the road remained stranded for three hours because of the blockade, causing much suffering to the passengers.
On receivign information, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Gausul Azam rushed to the spot and tried to calm the agitators. The local people withdrew the blockade after the UNO assured them that the district administration would take immediate measures to ease the suffering of local people.
Local people said a transformer situated at Kutubail went out of order after a covered van hit it.
They said they had already informed the electricy office about the matter, but they were yet to take any effective measures in this regard.
The locals alleged that they have been also suffering from acute water crisis for the last three days as there was no electricity at Kutubail.
“The HSC candidates are the worst sufferers of the situation as they could not concentrate on their studies because of scorching heat.”
When contacted, the UNO said: “Local people came to my house. They informed me that they have been suffering in absence of electricty.”
He said he had informed the bidyut office about the matter and the office would take measures to repair the transformer without any delay.
If needed, the authorities concerned would install a new transformer in the area, he said.
