Client’s money ‘vanishes’ in Islami Bank

Update : 07 Apr 2014, 05:08 AM

“Miscreants” have taken away a client’s money worth Tk1.5lakh from inside the premises of a Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited branch in Lakshmipur.

Officials of the bank once lamented to be affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami have acknowledged the matter and said “it was beyond their responsibility.”

The client, fruit businessman Abdur Rahim, was furious that the bank took “no steps” in this matter despite evidence of close circuit cameras.

“This has been done by a syndicate ring of the Islami Bank. Many other clients have suffered the same fate as I did,” he alleged.

On April 3, Tk1.5 lakh was taken away from the cash counter of the Islami Bank branch located on Godown road in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila.

The cash official concerned said to have refused the incident on the spot.

Later, close circuit camera footage showed three “unidentified miscreants” taking away the money from the bank-end of the cash counter.

Though the incident leaked, authorities did not take any apparent steps other than sit with the district association for businessmen on April 6.

“Since the money has been taken from inside the bank’s closing area, the authority cannot deny responsibility,” the association’s leader Mostafa Mohammad said.

Lakshmipur branch Islami Bank Manager Mohammad Nurul Hossain said: “The money is beyond the bank’s responsibility unless received in the counter.”

“The money has slipped from the client’s hand. We are strengthening our security systems,” he said.

Meanwhile, Masers Shafiqullah Kazi Fruits proprietor and victim Abdur Rahim is still, in the meantime, did not receive any compensation from the bank.
