Victims’ families receive compensation

Relatives of the four people who were killed during a toxic gas contamination at a ship-breaking yard at Sitakunda, received compensation yesterday from authorities of ship-breaking yard Arefin Enterprise, which provided Tk1 lakh for each of the victim’s families.

The Bangladesh Ship Breakers Association (BDBA) also pledged to extend more support for the families in future. The yard will also bear all medical expenses for the two others who were injured in the accident.

BSBA President Hefzatur Rahman, Vice President MA Taher, Arefin Enterprise Chairman Kamal Uddin, were present when compensation was handed over.

On Thursday, four people, Faruk, 28, Jashim, 26, Arif, 28, and Gias Uddin, 30, were killed and two others, Ramjan and Akbar, were poisoned after being exposed to toxic gas on a ship, MV Capital Lysenko, which recently arrived at the yard.
