2 sea robbers killed in ‘shootout’

Two suspected sea robbers have been killed during a “gunfight” with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Companyganj upazila in Noakhali district.

The deceased Jabed, 28, was second in command of Jasu group while Suman, 26, was the bodyguard of the group’s chief Shahdat Hossain.

Shahdat Hossain Jasu, the chief of the group, also said to have been dead in the crackdown in the area that has been taking place since Wednesday.

The gunfight took place in Charkhali area bordering Swandip early on Saturday, Chittagong, Noakhali Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) 11 Major Shahed said.

RAB was cracking down in the area since Monday, he said. Jasu and his associates fled into a nearby jungle sensing the presence of RAB on Wednesday.

“At one point, RAB drove into the jungle. Gunfight took place in phases. The chief of Jasu group, Sahadat Hossain Jasu died earlier” he said.

Around dawn on Saturday, Suman and Jabed died in another phase of gunfight with law enforcers, according to the RAB official.

A huge amount of firearms and equipments said to have been recovered from the spot. However, RAB did not elaborate on the details of the haul.
