Obaidul: Auto-rickshaw fare won't be hiked

Update : 02 Apr 2014, 08:32 AM

Fare rate for CNG-driven auto-rickshaws will not be hiked in the capital, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader has said.

The minister made the disclosure while speaking at a press conference after holding talks with owners’ association of CNG-driven auto-rickshaws on Wednesday.

The existing fare rate for CNG auto-rickshaws is Tk25 for the first two kilometres and Tk7.74 for any additional kilometre travelled.

Passengers also pay Tk1.40 per minute of halt during a ride. These rates are calculated via a meter that is provided with all CNG auto-rickshaws.

However, passengers have complained that drivers seldom agree to drive on meter rates; instead the fare is mostly bargained at a higher price.

The communications minister did not speak on this problem in the press conference.

Owners of the CNG auto-rickshaws have assured they will not harass passengers. They also asked the minister to ease harassment of the police.

In response, Obaidul Quader assured that his ministry will request the police administration regarding this matter.
