Policeman suspended for torturing trader

Update : 01 Apr 2014, 04:46 PM

A policeman has been suspended in the capital for “torturing” a businessman over alleged refusal to pay money as extortion early on Tuesday.

Jatrabari police Assistant Sub Inspector Saiful Islam was suspended for these allegations, Wari police Deputy Commissioner Mustaq Ahmed said.

A probe committee has been formed to investigate into the allegations, he said. “If any other police personals are found guilty, they will be punished.”

Locals said ASI Saiful beat up Nazmul Sheikh, 26, a steel trader in Sayedabad, for refusing to pay the policeman extortion money late on Monday night.

Injured Nazmul, owner of newly-opened SK Steel Mills, alleged that the policeman not only beat him up but banged his head against the wall.

“We were late in closing the shop because of end-of-the-month accounting. The policemen came and asked if I had paid them for my new shop.”

He is currently attending treatments at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Senior police officials of the Jatrabari police station visited him on Tuesday.
