SC stays Rana Plaza owner’s bail

Update : 01 Apr 2014, 02:59 PM

The Appellate Division of the apex court has stayed the High Court bail for Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana for four weeks on Tuesday.

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, chamber judge of the Supreme Court, passed the order in response to a state petition against the High Court bail.

On March 23, a vacation bench of the High Court granted Rana six-month bail in a Rajuk case for violating construction laws on “factual” grounds.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, representing state, established that if Sohel Rana had abided by the laws, the disaster would not have taken place.

Rana is currently in jail after capture in April 28 last year. He is also accused in other cases including one for death of workers for negligence.

Earlier, the High Court granted bail to Abdul Khalek, father of the building owner, and seven others in the case of negligence.

On April 24 last year, Rana Plaza caved in burying more than 1,100 lives and injuring about 2,500 others.
