Update : 30 Mar 2014, 03:42 AM

Another woman and her child, who sustained severe burn injuries in a gas cylinder blast in Kamrangirchar in the capital on Saturday morning, have died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Sunday, rising the death toll to three.

The deceased were identified as Joly Akhter, 28 and her two-year-old son Alif.

DMCH police outpost in-charge Muzammel Hossain has confirmed about the deaths to the Dhaka Tribune.

Aklima Begum, mother of Joly Akhtar, died around 6pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

She sustained 65% burn injuries which also affected her lungs, Dr Mohammad Adnan of the unit told the Dhaka Tribune.

Aklima’s daughter Joly Akhter and her grandson Alif, with 85% and 90% burn injuries respectively, were undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit.

Joly Akhter and her son Alif succumbed to their injuries early Sunday, Muzammel said.

Joly’s husband Ramjan Ali said the gas cylinder might have exploded because of a leak in the gas pipe connecting the cylinder and the burner around 11:30am.

A mechanic by profession, Ramjan said he was away from home at the time of the accident.

Sheikh Mohosin Alam, officer-in-charge of Kamrangirchar police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that they were informed following the incident and the locals doused the flame.
