BCIM corridor meeting in Dhaka this June

A meeting on the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) economic corridor will be held in Dhaka this June, junior Foreign Minister Shahriar Alam has said.

This will be the second meeting of the BCIM corridor joint working group after the first was held in Kunming, China on December 2013.

The junior minister hoped that the body will run on full flow after the meeting in Dhaka on June, a handout of the Ministry of Information said.

The government is working to establish the BCIM corridor as an effective regional body for economic support, that was an electoral promise of the Awami League, Shahriar Alam said.

“No country can attain economic growth without cooperation with others in this age of globalization. Greater economical assistance and intra-state communication is needed.”

The junior minister was speaking at a seminar titled Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor at the port city of Chittagong on Tuesday.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jun and the Assistant High Commissioner of India Swandip Chakraborty were present as special guests.

The seminar was organised jointly by Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and BRAC University.

Chief Guest of the programme, CCCI President Mahbubul Alam expressed hopes that the South Asian region will be an open economy zone in the coming years.
