Public need not pay new toll to fare on the roads and highways throughout the country, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader has said .
The minister made the statement at the secretariat on Tuesday to clear the confusion regarding the ratification of the Toll Policy 2014 draft.
He said: “People will pay tolls according to the existing system. The government will decide about imposing new toll after building new roads.”
On Monday, the cabinet approved the draft of Toll Policy 2014 at a regular meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The 22,000km district, regional and national road network of the country will be gradually brought under toll system according to the draft, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said.
Roads and Highways Division will be in charge of implementing the toll, he added. “The toll will be minimum Tk5 and a maximum of Tk1,000.”
The government will decide on the details including the toll amount on each roads. “This is service for the people. Revenue from the toll will be used for development.”
The move came within three months after the Awami League formed a successive government through the January 5 national election.
