Polls violence kills 4

At least four people have been killed in separate incidents of violence during the fourth phase of the upazila poll in four districts on Sunday.

Of the deceased, three are identified as Gazaria union parishad, Munshiganj, Chairman Shamsuddin Prodhan, Jhalakati Jubo League activist Ripon and Comilla Jubo Dal activist Munir Hossain.

Our Munshiganj Correspondent reports: Chairman of Gazaria union parishad has been killed in a clash between two groups of the ruling Awami League on Sunday morning.

He was chopped in the clash that left him critically injured. He was rushed to Gazaria upazila health complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead, said the returning officer.

In Jhalakati, Jubo League activist Ripon, 24, was beaten to death during a clash between Awami League and BNP supporters in Rajapur upazila on Sunday morning.

On the other hand, Jubo Dal member Monir Hossain, 25, died when police opened fire during an attempt to snatch ballot boxes at Barua upazila of Comilla district around 4pm on Sunday.

In Brahmanbaria, a youth was killed when members of Border Guard Bangladesh opened fire at a polling centre in Akhaura upazila.

Locals identified the youth as Hadith Mia, joint secretary of Akhaura upazila unit of Jubo Dal. However, Akhaura police station Officer-in-Charge Haddat Islam could not confirmed the identity of the deceased.
